6 Grocery Hacks To Help You Save

If you have to feed a family, you know just how expensive grocery shopping can get. Just this past week, a new report revealed that on average, Canadians will be spending about $420 more at the supermarket in 2017 than in the past year. So what can you do if you want to keep your spending in check? We've come up with a few, easy hacks to save you at least $20-$30 a week at the register!

1. Buy local and in season: It's wintertime and strawberries are $4.99 a pint. Unless you really need them, forego non-seasonal fruit and produce for food that is actually in season. Try instead, more economical options like oranges, bananas and apples. You won't only be saving money but you'll be more likely to support local growers.

2. Use Flipp: Printing and cutting coupons is a thing of the past. Get in with the times and download Flipp instead! It will aggregate all grocery flyers for you, and when you enter in the items you're looking to purchase (this takes a bit of prep!), it will find the best deals for you. All you need to do is go to a supermarket that price-matches (e.g. No Frills and Walmart) and present those lower prices to the cashier!

3. Don't shop hungry: Do not make eye contact with that $25 Nutella cheesecake. Just don't. (Bonus: saving you calories too!)

4. Buy international products: An increasing number of grocery stores and bringing in canned and packaged products from all over the world. What was once considered gourmet and exotic, is now affordable and convenient. Dare to walk on the wild side and try some of these money-saving, adventurous flavours!

5. Don't snub the frozen aisle: And we're not talking frozen entrees here! Scour the freezer for veggies like green beans, carrots and corn. They're almost as nutritious and their fresh counterparts and keep in the freezer for a few months!

6. Go Flexitarian: If you usually have lunch outside of your house, chances are you're getting animal protein once a day. So why not try some meat-free alternatives for dinner? Lentils and beans pack a lot of protein. And ridding your grocery cart of beef and chicken will bring down your bill quite a bit! Plus, your health will thank you too!
